I want to talk About Puerto Rico, Cuba & Hurricane Maria
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
At first, in fact, for quite awhile after PR & Cuba got near-annihilated by Maria, most people in the US were silent on the subject. Then suddenly, they all decided they had to help them and cared. Why? Because they got notified it's an "American territory".
I have problem with that. It's disturbing. The large swath of people that suddenly decided they cared & should help Puerto Rico only decided they should because of nationalism. Because "they're Americans too".
Who cares if they're American or not? Who cares if they're Hispanic, African, dutch or Indian? White or Black? Gay, or asexual? Fly a Puerto Rican, American or Russian flag? They're in desperate need of aid, help and support, hands on and in all other ways. That's why you should care, that's why it matters. It should never matter or be a concern or focus if or if not a country is under a certain jurisdiction & flag.
Another concern I have that disturbs me is the sheer lack of any attention or care at all going to Cuba after Hurricane Maria. They also got ripped apart by Hurricane Maria. Maria did one hell of a number on them too. Why Only Puerto Rico?
From how the response went from near-nothing to suddenly loads for Puerto Rico only after it was reiterated that PR was an American territory lends a hand to the likely fact that that is why Cuba is getting little to zero attention & support after Maria. Because they're not American to Americans. Sickening, wrong, immoral, pathetic and inhumane. Just honestly despicable. It's horrible. Cubans need just as much care, help, aid & support they can gain as Puerto Rico does post-Maria.
And yet, no one seems to give a damn at all. Not even all those with family there. Miami, New York, LA... the three main "strongholds" of Cuban families. And not a squeak about Cuba from most of them. You hear WAY more from people with family in Mexico still to this day after the substantial earthquakes they had a few weeks ago. But Cuba? Crickets.
I sit and wait, even search just a bit for any news or charity aid sites for Cuba after Maria. Still not a thing to this very day. It's sad. It's disheartening. IT's honestly wrongful too. How can people be so incredibly narrow minded in where they put their attention and have so little care in them? Be so incredibly particular and specific with the people they're willing to aid? Puerto Rico? Sure, because "they're American!" But Cuba? Or in example even, Jamaica? Venezuela? Zimbabwe? Thailand? Indonesia? Russia? Estonia? Tonga? Insert other non-American nation here not named England/UK? "WELL F**K THEM, THEY'RE JUST LAZY AND DON'T DO S**T FOR THEMSELVES." This is the majority of American sentiment. It's beyond words how abhorrent it is. So little if any care & damns given to those not considered American enough to them. Yet more proof of how toxic & dangerous Nationalism really is. It most often causes this exact mentality in the country's people. Arrogant, self-absorbed, "I-don't-give-a-damn-about-anyone-but ourselves" mentalities and people. The proof here in the US is "in the pudding" as they say. It's been blatant for decades upon decades, in fact, technically even our entire existence ever since July 4th, 1776.
My point for bringing this latter part up is to hopefully get people to start to realize that nationalist focus Americans is inhibiting the ability to care & willingness to aid others in just as dire need from Maria as Puerto Rico, and to hopefully get people to equalize their care & focus on both Cuba & PR in their time of dire need. Here I will finally put charity links so you can help Cuba ANd Puerto Rico as best you can:
tidal.com/puertorico
www.globalgiving.org/projects/hurricane-maria-caribbean-relief-fund/
Let's give Puerto Rico AND Cuba all the aid, support & help they can get, and put all hands on deck to aid them as best we can. Spread the word about these relief fund sites for Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean, and most importantly help spread the word to gain cuba & the other countries that are also in just as dire need of aid and Puerto Rico is. Any & all talking about it, sharing, noting & being active in letting people know that it's not just Puerto Rico, but others like Cuba that need the same amount of aid too that can & does help such an incredible amount!
